Many people in the Body of Christ are talking about unity in these days.
I've heard so much said about it that it would seem that that if words alone
could bring about unity, we would have all come into unity long ago. But
yet, we are still lacking unity in the Body of Christ.
Unity isn't about being the same. It doesn't mean that we all have to agree
with each other. It doesn't even mean that we all have to like each other.
Unity is about holding up each other's arms, supporting our brothers and
sisters, and not speaking out against them. It means that we honestly care
about one another, and are willing to pray that God's best is accomplished
in ach other's lives. It means that no matter what happens, we think of each
others as brothers and sisters in the lord.
Natural brothers and sisters have disagreements with each other once in a
while, but that doesn't mean that they stop being related. Nor does it mean
that they won't help each other out when there is a needIt only means that
the proximity of their relationship brings out the differences between them.
Because they are family, they forgive each other and hold each other up.
Even if two siblings are mad at each other because of a difference of opinion,
you better not take that as an opportunity to speak out against one of them.
If you do, the other will turn against you. Why? Because even though they
have a problem between them, they don't forget their relationship and love
for one another.
I like how Psalm 133 is written in Spanish:
Mirad cuán bueno y cuán agradable es que los hermanos habiten
juntos en armonía.
(Look how good and pleasant it is when the brothers live together in
harmony)
Sal 133:1
There's a word there that we don't find in this verse in English, it's "harmony."
Whenever I think of this word, I think of music. In music, the word harmony
speaks about differences. In a symphony, it is quite common to have a number
of different musical notes played at the same time. Each type of instrument
will be playing something different. But, together they make a beautiful
sound. Wny? Because each note, although distinct and different, supports
the other notes that are being played.
If you take an instrument, or even one note out of that symphony it won't
sound right. Each and every one has a purpose. Each and every one has it's
part to add to the total work being played. Each and every one is necessary.
So too, each and every part of the Body of Christ is necessary.
One major error in most people's talk about unity is that they aren't living
what they're saying. They talk, and talk, and talk about unity, but their
idea of unity isn't correct. Oh, they want unity all right, but they aren't
doing anything to make it happen They don't want to bring about unity, they
want everyone else to come into unity with them.
Unity can't come about by everyone else coming in agreement with you. You,
and I, aren't that great. True unity can only come about when we all come
in agreement with Jesus. Not with our opinion of Him, or our doctrine about
Him, but with Him.
Jesus has not established churches here in the world. He has established
His Church. Each and every congregation, each and every denomination, each
and every movement must be part of His Church. Otherwise, it isn't a work
of God at all, merely a work of man.
To be the church of Jesus Christ, we must be in unity. We cannot continue
divided, and expect His will to be accomplished among us. It is only when
we are each willing to sacrifice, to forgive, and to reestablish relationship
that His will can be done here on earth. Revival always starts in the hearts
of God's people. We need to be brought back to life, and to love.
What are you doing to bring about unity in the Body of Christ? To reestablish
fellowship with the brother you haven't talked to in a long time? To heal
the wounds that you caused in another believer's heart? To rectify the wrong
words that you've said about another minister, another church, or another
denomination?
Don't start thinking about what they've done to wrong you, think about what
you've done to wrong them. If all you every think about is yourself, you'll
never do the will of God. But, when we start thinking about the hurts in
another believer's heart, our own hurts don't seem as important.
If you aren't working to be part of the solution, then you are part of the
problem. Unity can only come about when each and every believer works to
make it happen. When we are willing to pay the price for unity. Not to force
the other brother to agree with you, but to agree with him. Not to force
him to support you, but to support him. Not to compromise, but to find a
place where the two of you already agree, then focus on that area of agreement,
instead of only focusing on your disagreements. |
