I have come to the conclusion that most people, even most Christians, think
that God is a liar. I'm not sure how they came to that conclusion, but I'm
sure that's the conclusion they've come to. I know this, because I've watched
how they deal with God, and it's quite clear that they don't believe anything
that God says.
These people are always modifying what God has said. Sometimes, they do it
by adding commandments that God never said. Other times, they ignore promises
that God made. Still other times, they do it by saying that, "God didn't
really mean that, He meant this."
I'm not really sure where this idea that God is a liar came from, but it
seems to be pretty widespread. You can go into just about any church and
find someone who is busy calling God a liar. Oh, they try and make it sound
like they're not saying that, but when you really look at the root of what
they're saying, it all boils down to the same thing, "God's a liar." No matter
how they twist and turn the words, it's all the same.
I think, if I was God, I'd be highly insulted by this attitude. After all,
you don't get to be God by being a liar, you get to be the devil by being
a liar.
Everything that God says is the truth. It isn't a "maybe." It isn't a "sometimes
truth." It's the one and only truth that exists. It doesn't have to be modified,
interpreted, or adjusted. We don't have to cast lots to see if this is the
time it will work, or not. All we have to do is believe.
Of course, to believe, we have to know what God has said about it. That's
where a lot of people get in trouble, they don't really know the Word of
God. Oh, they think they know, but they don't really. They know what they've
heard about the Word of God. They know what somebody has preached to them.
They know a few verses they've memorized. But, they don't really know what
God has said about their situation, or need.
It isn't enough to know a few verses, or a few things that we've been taught.
All too often, what we've been taught is something of doctrine, based upon
a few verses that are taken out of context, not the full counsel of God.
Let's go back to the part of people thinking that God is a liar for a moment.
How many times have you heard someone say something like, "I know God's a
healer, but I'm not sure if He's going to heal me?" Or, how about, "God is
my provider, but could you loan me some money until He comes through for
me?" Or even, "Well, that works for you, but I'm not sure if it'll work for
me?"
These are all statements of doubt. They are statements that say the person
doesn't have faith, or confidence in what God has said to them through the
Bible. Even though they are saying out of one side of their mouth that they
have faith in God, out of the other side of their mouth, they are saying
that they have no reason to trust God "in their particular case" (as if their
problem is more difficult for God than someone else's).
The writer of Hebrews tells us, "Without faith it is impossible to please
God" (Heb 11:6a). Catch that good, it doesn't say it is difficult to please
God, it doesn't say that we can partially believe God, it says that it's
IMPOSSIBLE to please Him. Why is it impossible to please God without faith?
The second part of the verse tells us that. "For he that cometh to God must
believe that he is, and that he is a rewarder of them that diligently seek
Him" (Heb 11:6b). We must believe that He rewards us if we
diligently seek Him. In what way? By praying, and trusting that God will
answer our prayers. Not just for salvation, but for every promise that He
has written in His Word.
If you need help from God, find out what He has said about it. Don't depend
on what somebody else tells you He said, find out for yourself. Dig into
the Bible. Find out what's in there. Let the Holy Spirit teach you. Then
you'll have a basis for trusting God, and will move from the ranks of those
who call Him a liar, into the ranks of the people of faith.
By the way, all those people who are calling God a liar are receiving exactly
what they are believing… NOTHING! So, you can be like them and receive the
same reward, nothing. Or, you can learn God's Word, learn to trust in Him,
and become one of the people who receive God's blessings. The choice is yours. |
