Commandment |
How it Shows God |
1 |
You shall have no other gods
before me. |
Because of God's haceed love towards
us, we are first place in His life. He wants that type of intimate relationship
with us, so that He is first place in our lives. |
2 |
You shall not make for yourself an idol in
the form of anything in heaven above or on the earth beneath or in the waters
below. 5 You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the LORD
your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of the fathers
to the third and fourth generation of those who hate me, 6 but showing love
to a thousand [generations] of those who love me and keep my commandments. |
God wants us to understand the difference
between Him as our creator, and His creation. Idols that are images of things
that He created, are putting those things natural in the place of the
supernatural (His place). |
| God is the only one who deserves our
worship. Our worship of things that we create is the same as Him worshipping
us, His creation. |
| The punishment going on to several
generations shows how generational curses come from our sins. |
| God shows love for more generations
that He shows punishment. His love is greater than His sense of justice. |
3 |
You shall not misuse the name of the LORD your
God, for the LORD will not hold anyone guiltless who misuses his name. |
Names have authority, especially God's
name. |
| God and His name are worthy of our
honor. |
4 |
Remember the Sabbath day by keeping it holy. 9
Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is
a Sabbath to the LORD your God. On it you shall not do any work, neither
you, nor your son or daughter, nor your manservant or maidservant, nor your
animals, nor the alien within your gates. 11 For in six days the LORD made
the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, but he rested
on the seventh day. Therefore the LORD blessed the Sabbath day and made it
holy. |
We are required to take time for
our relationship with God. |
| God understands the need we have of
rest. Rest isn't wasted time, it is a time of rejuvenation. |
| Since we are created in God's image,
and He took time to rest, we have the right to do the same. |
5 |
Honor your father and your mother,
so that you may live long in the land the LORD your God is giving you. |
God has established certain authorities
in our lives. When we are in rebellion to those authorities, we are in rebellion
to Him, and will not be blessed. |
6 |
You shall not murder. |
God holds the life that He created
in us as being valuable. |
| Since God created us, He has the right
to our lives. He will not condone another taking His rights. |
7 |
You shall not commit adultery. |
Sexual intimacy is a covenant act.
By committing adultery, we are breaking the covenant. Our God is a covenant
God, and wants us to hold covenant in reverence. |
| Adultery is a symbol of idolatry. |
8 |
You shall not steal. |
Our provision comes from Him. If we
are in lack, we need to repent, and look to Him for our provision. |
| Taking something from another without
the right to do so is a type of covetousness. |
| Satan tried to steal God's place by
putting his throne above God's. When we steal, we are putting our position
above another's. |
9 |
You shall not give false testimony
against your neighbor. |
Our God is truth, and all truth emanates
from Him. Any form of falsehood comes from the enemy, and puts us in his
kingdom. |
10 |
You shall not covet your neighbor's
house. You shall not covet your neighbor's wife, or his manservant or
maidservant, his ox or donkey, or anything that belongs to your neighbor. |
Coveting is the same as saying that
we are unsatisfied with what God has done for us. |
