Using Your Calling
I've been told many times that God called me to do something for Him. As far as I was concerned, it was just so many words, I never did really take it seriously. I just wanted to continue with my life the way it was, and be an average Christian. I was kind of thinking that maybe I would be a missionary when I grew up. Then, a few years ago, I got on fire for God and became serious about being the type of Christian that He wanted me to be. I didn't have to wait until I grew up to do what God wanted me to do.
The word of the Lord came to me, saying, (5) "Before I formed you in the womb I knew you, before you were born I set you apart; I appointed you as a prophet to the nations." (6) "Ah, Soverign Lord,"I said, "I do not know how to speak; I am only a child." (7) But eh Lord said to me, "Do not say, "I am only a child…" Jeremiah 1:4-7a In Jeremiah's culture, he would have had to be 30 years old before he would be considered mature enough to teach, prophesy, or preach. I don't know what all versions of the Bible say, but the NIV says he was a child. If you ask me, that sounds quite a bit younger than 30. He started young, but later, he became one of the most known prophets in the Bible. Jeremiah wasn't the only youth that God used, either. Josiah became king of Judah when he was only eight years old! Now that's really young! Okay, so you are called by God, and we understand that you don't have to be old before you can operate in your calling. But, what do you do about operating in your calling? You need to realize that God has already equipped you for what He has called you to do. If you don't know what your calling is, then pray, seek God, and meditate (that's think) about it. He will let you know at the right time. It wouldn't hurt to start getting ready for the time when you will be working in your calling. For example, let's say you are called to minister to people in music. You could wait for God to teach you to play the piano, Himself. But, you would be better off getting a piano, and starting to practice. If you really are willing to be used by God, the most important thing is to study the Bible and keep your eyes on the Lord. God needs you to become mature as a Christian (not the same as being an adult) for Him to use you. Give Him total control of your life, and let Him do what He wants to with it. |
