Teaching Science to High
Schoolers
Science seems to be one of those areas that scares the average homeschooler.
During the seminar, Rich dispels some of the "myth" that clouds the
study of science, and gives practical ideas of how to incorporate science
study into our everyday lives. It's not as hard as you think.
Although this seminar is geared for those with older students, the information
is usable to those with younger students as well.
Physics
Workshops
Many homeschool organizations provide a "teen track" at their annual
conference. These workshops have been provided to instruct and motivate our
youth on their educational process.
One of the problem areas that homeschoolers have is teaching their children
about Physics. Somehow, this has become a "difficult" subject, best left
for scientists. These workshops have been designed to teach these students
about basic physics principles. Several different workshops are available,
including:
-
Simple Machines - Levers, Pulleys and Gears
-
Structures - How do buildings and bridges stand up?
-
Temperature - Heat, Heat Transfer, and Heat Effects
Other workshops are in process, and will soon be available. In each workshop,
basic principles will be presented. For each principle, an experiment will
show the actual application of the principle. All of the "scientific equipment"
used is available from your local hardware store. Rich involves members of
the audience in the experiments.
The goal of these workshops is to teach the student how Physics applies
to daily life. Material is of high-school level, but can be understood by
late elementary students. Instead of making Physics difficult, Rich simplifies
it, and makes it understandable.
Organization
For 15 years, Rich was a Manufacturing Engineer. His area of specialty
was process improvement. By saving time, Rich saved the companies he worked
for millions of dollars. These same principles apply to running our homes,
just like they work in business.
Organization 101 - How Can I Get it All Done?
An old saying goes "Failure to plan is planning to fail." As home schoolers,
we have more demands on our time then most. Since we all only have 24 hours
in the day, we can't afford to waste any of them. God has clear cut priorities
in how to manage this time, and what we are to use it for.
In this workshop, Rich discusses God's priorities for our time. Yes, training
our children is one of them, but how do we fit everything else in? Truly
effective people plan their time to make the most use of it. This can be
almost like having a 36 hour day.
Organization 102 - Where Do I Put All This Stuff?
How much time do you waste trying to find things? For most of us, this
can be a frustrating fact of life. In studies he has conducted, Rich found
that an organized work space can save the average person 30% of their time.
Or, put another way, being organized can help you get 30% more
accomplished.
In this workshop, Rich shares basic principles, and practical insights
on how to better organize the space we live and school in. Yes, we all have
space limitations, so let's use what we've got the best we can.
Marriage &
Intimacy
Marriage Mini Seminar
Home schooling can put a strain on even the best of marriages. While all
that quality family time helps bond your children closer to you, it can keep
you from having the time you need with your spouse. It is too easy with all
the demands on our time to forget to find time to minister to, and be ministered
to by our spouses.
In this three hour mini-seminar, Rich covers the following subjects:
-
God's plan in marriage.
-
Making time for yourself and your spouse.
-
Communicating your needs.
-
The "one flesh" relationship.
-
Intimacy, and how it helps strengthen your relationship.
By better understanding God's plan in marriage, and his purposed in marital
intimacy, we are all better prepared to work with our partner for a stronger
marital relationship. God created marriage, He made it good, now it's up
to us to keep it working. This mini-seminar will help strengthen marriages.
How to Teach Your Children About Sex
Every Christian (and most non-Christian) parent wants their children to
abstain from Sex before marriage. However, the statistics say that Christian
teens are almost as likely to have pre-marital sex as non-Christians.
Hosea 4:6 says: "My people are destroyed (perish) for lack of knowledge..."
This is one area that Christian knowledge is sorely lacking. There is very
little teaching about this area in the Body of Christ. Therefore, our youth
grow up learning mostly the "don'ts" about sex. With a clear understanding
of God's plan in marital intimacy, temptation dies down. Don't let your children
"perish" for lack of knowledge.
Rich & Deborah Murphy have done an extensive study on God's plan for
marital intimacy. In this workshop, Rich discusses the basics of God's plan,
and how to teach it to your children.
Language Learning HIS Way -
An easy approach to learning languages for witnessing
Most home-schoolers have problems teaching foreign languages to their
children. This is because they had inadequate instruction themselves. Language
instruction that concentrates on grammar is ineffective.
To teach languages effectively, use the same method that is used for teaching
the first language. Use sounds, then words, then phrases. This teaches
communication, the purpose of language.
Course Outline:
-
The need to know a second language - Witnessing & Missions.
-
Problems with language instruction.
-
Review of how we teach children to talk.
-
Teaching second language.
-
Phonics
