God Cut Our Rent in Half
Matthew 6:33 says: "But seek ye first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness;
and all these things shall be added unto you." Right before this, Jesus was
admonishing about searching after their worldly needs. Then here, He tells
them to let God provide those things. Our job isn't to meet our physical
needs, that's God's job, ours is only to seek God, to draw close to Him,
and do as He asks us to.
When God led us into ministry, He showed us his provision in a very practical
way.
I had been an engineering manager for a manufacturing company, making over
$50,000 per year. We lived in upstate New York, where housing (and everything
else) is quite expensive. Rent on the house we were living in was $1,100.00
per month. That was very high by our thinking, but not unusual for that area.
The company I was working for decided to shutdown the New York plant. This
left me without a job, and having to go through the job search process. Nobody
enjoys having to look for work, but it's something we had to do.
On the same day that I received an offer for an engineering position making
more money than my previous job, I was asked to go on staff for our church
at a much lower rate. we had known for several years that God was calling
us into ministry, so every time we had a potential job change opportunity,
we'd ask God if this was his timing. After praying about the two offers we
had, we were sure that God wanted us to take the position at the church.
We only one problem with the ministry position. On that salary, there was
no way we could afford to stay in the house we had. So, we were going to
have to move. We started looking for a cheaper house to rent. Our landlords
just happened to drop by, and we told them about the situation, and that
we were going to have to move.
When we told them, they asked how much rent we were going to be able to afford.
We told them $550.00 per month, thinking that they might know someone else
who had a rental property in that price range. Since I was still receiving
severance pay from my previous job, we scheduled the move for one month later.
The next night, we had a phone call from our landlords. They said, "We don't
know why we're doing this, and we don't understand what you'll be doing in
ministry, but we feel that we need to cut your rent in half for the next
six months." We actually ended up spending a total of nine more months in
that house.
Praise the Lord! Here we were, starting in our first ministry position, and
God was already supplying abundantly more than we had hoped or dreamed. |
